The Fatherland Party, or Otan is a political party in Kazakhstan, led by Gani Yesimov. It has 24 of 77 seats in the Assembly of Kazakhstan and governs in coalition with independents.
They were: the Agrarian Party, Ak Zhol (Bright Path), Asar (All Together), Ayul (Farmers), the Civil Party, the Communist Party of Kazakhstan, the Communist Peoples Party, DCK (Democratic Choice), the Democratic Party of Kazakhstan, Otan (Fatherland), Party of Patriots, and Rukhaniyat (Spirituality).
Kazakhstan is a constitutional republic with a strong presidency.
Opposition parties, which were officially registered and competed in the elections, won a single seat during elections that the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe said fell short of international standards.
The highest court in Kazakhstan is the Supreme Court, whose members are nominated by the president and chosen by the Senate.
Other opposition parties include the Communist Party of Kazakhstan (CPK), which was banned in 1991 but then legalized again in 1994; and the Azamat (Citizen) Democratic Party of Kazakhstan, a small left-leaning reformist party.
Kazakhstan is also a member of the United Nations (UN); the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE); and the Partnership for Peace program of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), established to provide for limited military cooperation between NATO and non-NATO states.
