Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,605 km˛ (1,006 mi˛). 2,590 km˛ (1,000 mi˛) of it is land and 14 km˛ (6 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.55% water.

The county is divided into twenty-three townships: Arcade, Bryant, Centerville, Clark, Devoe, Ellisville, Emerson, Enterprise, Fairview, Freedom, Hillsdale, Irving, Lafoon, Myron, O'Neil, Orient, Pioneer, Saratoga, Sherman, Tamworth, Union, Wesley, and Zell; and one area of unorganized territory: Southwest Faulk.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,640 people, 1,014 households, and 708 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km˛ (3/mi˛). There are 1,235 housing units at an average density of 0/km˛ (1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 99.47% White, 0.08% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.04% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.27% from two or more races. 0.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,014 households out of which 28.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.40% are married couples living together, 3.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.10% are non-families. 29.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.18.


In the county, the population is spread out with 26.60% under the age of 18, 5.40% from 18 to 24, 23.10% from 25 to 44, 22.00% from 45 to 64, and 22.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 99.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.70 males.
