Fayette County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 21,804. Its county seat is La Grange6. Fayette is named for the Marquis de la Fayette, the Revolutionary War hero.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,486 km˛ (960 mi˛). 2,461 km˛ (950 mi˛) of it is land and 25 km˛ (10 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.02% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 84.58% White, 7.01% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 6.66% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 12.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
