Fayette County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 21,804. Its county seat is La Grange6. Fayette is named for the Marquis de la Fayette, the Revolutionary War hero.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,486 km˛ (960 mi˛). 2,461 km˛ (950 mi˛) of it is land and 25 km˛ (10 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.02% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 21,804 people, 8,722 households, and 6,044 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km˛ (23/mi˛). There are 11,113 housing units at an average density of 5/km˛ (12/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 84.58% White, 7.01% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 6.66% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 12.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 8,722 households out of which 28.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.00% are married couples living together, 7.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.70% are non-families. 28.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.97.


In the county, the population is spread out with 23.20% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 23.60% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 22.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 93.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.00 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $34,526, and the median income for a family is $43,156. Males have a median income of $29,008 versus $20,859 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,888. 11.40% of the population and 8.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.70% of those under the age of 18 and 13.50% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Fayette County Lake was constructed by the LCRA and the City of Austin a 2,400-acre cooling pond for the Fayette Power Project.
