Fayston is a town located in Washington County, Vermont. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,141.


Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.5 km˛ (36.5 mi˛). 94.5 km˛ (36.5 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,141 people, 484 households, and 312 families residing in the town. The population density is 12.1/km˛ (31.3/mi˛). There are 900 housing units at an average density of 9.5/km˛ (24.7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 98.25% White, 0.53% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.96% from two or more races. 0.96% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 484 households out of which 30.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.4% are married couples living together, 6.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.5% are non-families. 25.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.36 and the average family size is 2.85.


In the town the population is spread out with 22.8% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 28.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 103.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.6 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $53,472, and the median income for a family is $60,938. Males have a median income of $35,139 versus $26,852 for females. The per capita income for the town is $28,196. 5.5% of the population and 2.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.3% of those under the age of 18 and 5.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History of Fayston Vermont (404 words)
Said to have the highest average elevation of any town in Vermont, the high lateral ridge along the west border of Town is a barrier that directed the business of the north to Moretown and the business of the south to Waitsfield.
Fayston was charted in 1788 and was among the many towns sold to proprietors, most of whom were speculators.
At the time, these speculators were heralded as "patriots" helping to defend the independent republic which had to raise money to support its government, pay its soldiers and defend its frontiers, in particular Lake Champlain, which was threatened by invasion from the British.

There is no indication as to why such an insignificant (at the time) parcel was named for the Fays, a family which figured so prominently in the founding of the state, nor is there any indication as to what the family thought of having a town named for them.
Son Joseph was Clerk of the Governor and the Council, negotiated with the Governor of Canada for a separate peace between Vermont and England, and represented Vermont at the first Continental Congress in its effort to be admitted to the Union.
The Green Mountain Boys were known to apply what they referred to as "the beech seal" (to whip with a beech switch) to Yorkers who tried to dispute the settlers' right to Vermont lands under the Wentworth grants.
