Encyclopedia > Federation Without Television

The Federation Without Television is a not for profit organization currently centered in Mankato, Minnesota, USA. It was founded by Andrew Bushard on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 1998.


Federation Without Television has five main objectives:

  • To encourage less television watching
  • To promote greater awareness of the effects of mainstream media on society
  • To encourage creativity and spontaneity
  • To provide forums of critical inquiry and intellectual stimulation
  • To provide a forum for ideas ignored, suppressed, marginalized, or vilified by the mainstream media.

The Federation regularly sponsors public lectures, debates, presentations, and other forums of discussion. It also offers free zines, literature, and audio tape lectures and discussions. In 2000, Xlibris Press published the book Federation Without Television: the Blossoming Movement: Essays and Leaflets by Andrew Bushard (http://www1.xlibris.com/bookstore/bookdisplay.asp?bookid=10336), a manifesto of the movement.
