The Federation of the Democratic and Socialist Left (Fédération de la gauche démocrate et socialiste or FGDS) was a conglomerate of French center-left non-Communist forces. During the May 68 events, François Mitterrand annouced his candidature for an anticipated presidential election. He thought Charles de Gaulle resigned after a defeat in the referendum about sharing-profit of the companies. François Mitterrand was considered as responsible for this failure. In November 1968, he resigned and the federation exploded. He came to the conclusion that he need a real and big political party.
