It is a private, non-profit trade association, with over 500 members representing more than 90% of all Swiss watch manufacturers (finished products, watch movements, components, etc.).


The Federation's avowed goals are:

  • "To contribute to the development of the Swiss watch industry."
  • "To establish a permanent link between its members to promote their joint interests."
  • "To represent the Swiss watch industry in dealing with the Swiss, foreign and international authorities and economic organisations."
  • "To protect the interests of its members in the drafting of national and foreign legislation, as well as during international negotiations to defend its members' interests by means of legal proceedings."

Aside from offices in Switzerland, it maintains permanent offices in Hong Kong and Japan.

A watch whose mainspring is wound by the movements or accelerations of the wearer's arm.
In the Swiss watch industry, the term manufacture is used of a factory in which watches are manufactured almost completely, as distinct from an "atelier de terminage", which is concerned only with assembling, timing, fitting the hands and casing.
Skeleton watch: watch in which the case and various parts of the movement are of transparent material, enabling the main parts of the watch to be seen.

At the present time the Swiss watch industry is applying two parallel technologies: electronic technology, with the analog quartz watch (sometimes combined with digital display) and the more traditional technology of the mechanical watch which origin dates back in the 14th century.
In an analog quartz watch, the heart of the watch is the integrated circuit, made up of a large number of electronic components grouped together on a base of only a few square millimeters.
A watch is said to be finished when the movement has been fitted with a dial, hands, and case.
