Labour Party: Information from Answers.com (7644 words)
It is currently the party of government in the United Kingdom and also in national and regional parliaments or assemblies in Scotland (in coalition with the Scottish Liberal Democrats), Wales and London.
The Labour party returned to government with a wafer-thin 4 seat majority under Harold Wilson in the 1964 election, and increased their majority to 98 in 1966 election remaining in power until the 1970 election which contrary to expectations during the campaign they lost.
At the 1987 general election, the party was again defeated in a landslide, but had at least re-established itself as the clear challengers to the Conservatives and gained 20 seats reducing the Conservative majority to 102 from 143 in 1983 despite a sharp rise in turnout.
