Feis Ceoil (Irish: Festival of Music) is an annual Irish cultural festival of music and dance. It was first organized in 1897 by Dr. Annie Patterson and consisted competitions for performance and composition and was supported by all musicians of the day, both national and classical. Feis Ceoil has now expanded to more than 170 competitions in all instruments, including voice, and covering all ages from 8 years upwards.

Feis Ceoil was founded in 1896 by the chief representatives of music activity in Ireland under the guidance of Dr. Annie Patterson, to counteract the neglect of music development in this country.
To be successful at the Feis is very important in the musical career of many entrants, for many others it is a means of obtaining enhanced enjoyment from their music while also providing a yardstick by which to measure their personal standards.
Feis Ceoil has now expanded to cover 160 competitions in all instruments, including voice, and covering all ages from 9 years upwards.
History - Feis Ceoil Music Festival (650 words)
This first Feis Ceoil was such a resounding success that the Feis Ceoil Association was formed with the intention of running this competitive music festival annually, rotating between Dublin, Belfast and Cork.
The first Feis Ceoil had 32 competitions, 12 of which were for composition, 6 for vocal ensemble and the rest for solo performance.
To-day Siemens Feis Ceoil continues to provide that all-important first platform for those of our young musicians who wish to become performers and for all those who simply wish to show their love for the music which they have been studying.
