Felpham (sometimes pronounced locally as Felf-ham) is a village in West Sussex. Although sometimes concidered part of the greater Bognor Regis habitation it is a village and civil parish in its own right, having an area of 4.26 km² and a population of 9611 persons (2001 census). The 16th century parish church is dedicated to St Mary. There is also a small R.C. church close to the three-way junction of Felpham Way, Flansham Lane and Middleton Road to the east of the village.

History

William Blake lived here briefly. The cottage where he lived lies within the original village, close to "The Fox" public house. William Blake has a road named after him, Blakes Road, the same road were his once residence is sited. The village has both a village hall, called the Memorial Hall, built in remembrance to the fallen from World War I and a Church hall.

Great expansion of the village took place between 1930 and 1960 when three (nominally) gated housing estates were developed and again in the 1970s when two (public) housing developments took place on farmland between Felpham and it's neighbouring village of Middleton-on-Sea. In December 2006 planing permission was granted for further development, this time on farmland to the north [1]. Sports and recreation

Felpham has a King George's Field in memorial to King George V. Home to Predators Football club. Predators are the largest grass roots football club in Sussex. Predators boast at least 17 youth teams including 4 girls teams, 4 adult teams and 1 womans team. Felpham Community College, the main school in the area, operates its own Youth Wing.


Felpham Colts Football Club (incorporating Felpham Girls F.C. and Felpham Ladies F.C.) is the largest youth football club in West Sussex. The club is completely independent and not attached to any of the large local senior football teams. It has 26 teams competing in local football leagues and has been in existence since 1973. The club's teams can be found training at King George V Field on Saturday mornings and playing at Shrubbs Field in nearby Middleton-on-Sea and King George V Field on Sundays.

Felpham also retained its lack of conventionality in contrast to larger resorts; unlike at Bognor there were no rules or bylaws about access to the sea, and at least one boarding house c.
Though he left Felpham in disillusion Blake was at first happy there, describing it as 'the sweetest spot on earth', 'a dwelling for immortals', and the villagers as 'polite and modest', the men 'the mildest of the human race'.

Felpham Flower Festival (785 words)
The Felpham Flower Festival coincided with the Open Gardens event in the village and also included a champagne reception in the church on Thursday to launch the Festival, and a jam-packed Festival Concert on the Friday evening.
Blake also wrote most of his Milton (1804) at Felpham and the preface to this particular work is famous as the words of the hymn 'Jerusalem'.
Timothy Peskett (announced as the part time organist!) displayed his prowess at the organ with a Toccata in G and another highlight for me was when Jack Enticott, son of Sue Endicott (Village Voices) accompanied his mother on guitar whilst she very movingly read 'The Trees' by Phillip Larkin.
