The 1976 Summer Olympics , officially known as the Games of the XXI Olympiad, were held in 1976 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Montreal 1976 pointed the way to the future in Olympic security, which was further increased for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. This was seen as a major threat to the future of the Olympic Games, and was not until the financially successful 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles that cities began to line up to be hosts again.
