Encyclopedia > Fender Swinger

The Fender Swinger (also known as the Fender Musiclander) was a short-lived model released by Fender in 1969. The Swinger was merely an attempt by CBS (which had bought the company in 1965) to get money out of unused factory stock by combining spare parts. It was never seriously promoted, and low in popularity as a result. Fender's 3/4 Scale Guitars: (5919 words)
The bridge was essentially Fender's crude interpretation of a floating "tune-o-matic"; the inertia bar studs were affixed to springs (under the plate) that counteracted the pull of string tension.
Surplus Fender "Bass V" bodies (a slow selling 5-string bass from earlier in the decade) were substantially altered to create the "Swinger" body: the top horn (at the strap button) was chopped off at an angle, and the bottom of the body (at the lower strap button) was radically scooped out into a semi- circle.
Fender's 3/4 scale guitars are still generally held in low regard by the collecting and retail communities (though that hasn't prevented some dealers from jacking up their asking prices for vintage Musicmasters, Duos and Mustangs to unprecedented levels).
Fender - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (1205 words)
Fender offered the first mass-produced solid-body Spanish-style electric guitar, the Telecaster (originally named the 'Broadcaster', 'Esquire' is a single pickup version); the first mass-produced electric bass, the Precision Bass (or P-Bass); and the enormously popular Stratocaster guitar (or 'Strat' for short).
Fender manufactures its highest quality models in the United States, but also has extensive manufacturing facilities in Japan, Mexico (company-owned) China, Indonesia (Cort) and Korea (Cort), such that a new guitar with the name, 'Fender Stratocaster,' can be purchased for roughly the same dollar amount today as in 1954.
Fenders built in Ensenada, Mexico took over for the early Japanese guitars as the less expensive counterparts to the American models, while more recent Japanese Fenders are now mainly for the Japanese market, as counterparts to the American-made Fenders, and with only a small number marked for export.
