But within three months Fengdu will become a ghost town - one of the dozens of cities, towns and villages to be abandoned and eventually inundated as the water rises to consume the spectacular Three Gorges on the Yangtze River.
Many in Fengdu and elsewhere along the river complain that the government is not paying enough compensation to the 1.2 million being moved.
Fengdu is a day's travel by boat downstream to the 185-metre-high dam wall.
Now a new Fengdu lies on the opposite side of the river—a pincushion of half-finished buildings and gleaming hotels that is dedicated to the god of greed.
Fengdu is one of those earmarked for a watery grave.
In February, Huang Faxiang, director of the land resources administration of Fengdu county, was sentenced to death for skimming off $1.8 million in land sales revenues.
