Ferndown has a relatively large elderly population (38.5% are aged 60 or above).[1] On the outskirts of the town lie the Ferndown and Uddens industrial estates.


Ferndown has very little for teenagers to do due to the local council not providing any facilties for teenagers which has led to a significant anti-social problem in the area.


Ferndown also boasts one of the biggest and most successful upper schools in Dorset. With around 1,224 pupils Ferndown Upper School has one of the highest "'C' and above" records at GCSE in Dorset. There has also been a new system in Ferndown Upper school with houses, which grouped the pupils into 4 different, coloured groups, with many pupils in each group ranging in years. Ferndown has a King George's Field in memorial to King George V. Ferndown Golf Club offers two courses, The Old Course also known as the Championship Course and the nine hole Presidents Course.


Ferndown Community Centre is one of the town's main attractions, home to the Barrington Theatre. It is also home to many other small stores which include Tesco's, Superbuy's, Superdrug and the local and quite large Ferndown library.



Also there are many large heathlands arounds Ferndown including Holt heath. Many are good for cycling or walking. There is also a fair amount of woodland. Also on many of the heaths and in much of the woodland there are many burial mounds and small ponds. However recently Ferndown heath visible from King George the V playing field has been subject to several heath fires.


There is also Ferndown leisure centre with many different activities and sports to do and equipment to use. Which is just by the field which means good facilities for outdoor activities to.

Ferndown Pipes (330 words)
About 90% of the Ferndowns (which are marketed in Germany under the name Ellwood-for L Wood-get it?) are made in rusticated "Bark" finish and the balance are a smooth "Root" finish.
Especially unusual is the fact that a full 50% of all Ferndowns pipes are mounted in silver or gold.
The reason for all this precious metallurgy is that Les Wood is England's premier silver mounter of briar pipes and is the only pipemaker in Britain with engine turning/mounting facilities in his workshop.
