Mogae has made clear he intends to step down in 2008 in line with the constitution that limits the time in office to 10 years.
Born in the village of Serowe in eastern Botswana, Festus Gontebanye Mogae was raised in a poor family of cattle farmers who would sell off prize members of their herd to pay for his education.
Mogae has said he plans to hand the baton to his vice president Ian Khama when he retires in 2008.
