Fianarantsoa, bridging high plateaus and the Southeast Coast of Madagascar is one of the poorest of Madagascar’s six newly (2001) autonomous provinces.
In March Fianarantsoa became a strategic focal point in the conflict between the “legal” president and the self-proclaimed “legitimate” president, the latter claiming to have 54% of the vote in the first round and now running a “new” central government in the capital.
Fianarantsoa’s capital on the high plateaus south of Antananarivo was the one provincial capital where the governor had not succeeded in repressing mass demonstrations in favor of Ravalomanana.
