FilePlanet is a video game download service that provides free game patches, mod files and media downloads to its users. FilePlanet was launched, and is run by, GameSpy, which is now a subsidiary of IGN, and is one of the most used video game download sites on the internet. Users can either subscribe for a fee to access high-speed servers or use a free registration to access public servers, which usually have wait times before downloading. FilePlanet contains many different types of files such as game demos, trailers, and patches. Fileplanet also offers it subscribing members access to closed betas of upcoming and new games. Fileplanet is used by many game developers to host game clients and patches. This is due to the developer being able to gain statistics on what type of gamer is downloading their patches and what other items they have downloaded from the site. While the site is an exceptional file archive, it is noted that it requires registration or payment to access every feature on the site. FilePlanet is a video game download service, similar to Gamespot DLX and FileFront.
FilePlanet was started in 1996 by GameSpy, which is now a subsidiary of IGN Entertainment, Inc. and is one of the most trafficked video game download sites on the internet.
Users can either subscribe for a fee to access high-speed servers or use a free GameSpy registration to access public servers, which may have a queue before downloading.
Fileplanet got themselves into this mess when they took on being a central download site for files that should have been left to their originator's responsibility.
FilePlanet should remove the large bandwidth hogging demo and promo hosting, and get back to being a central download point for maps and other user created works.
If GSI choose to continue down the present route, which is to try and make Fileplanet the ultimate one stop file drop while burning through bandwidth and money like no tomorrow, then I'd consider this "offer" of a personal server a slap in the face.
