Filipino (formerly Pilipino) is based on Tagalog and is the official language of the Philippines.
English is generally used for educational, governmental and commercial purposes and is widely understood since it is the medium of instruction in schools.
Since English is widely spoken in the Philippines, it is common to hear Filipinos use a mixture English and Filipino words or phrases, known as "Taglish" (a mixture of English and Tagalog), in their everyday conversations.
Under the Constitution of 1987, the national language is Filipino while the official languages are Filipino and English.
Furthermore, despite the Filipino language being made the official language of the country, it is still primarily based on Tagalog and thus natively spoken by only (24%) of the population.
The word was coined by expatriate Filipino Americans during the 1920's and was later adopted by Filipinos in the Philippines.
