According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,233 km˛ (862 mi˛). 2,231 km˛ (861 mi˛) of it is land and 2 km˛ (1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.10% water.

There are 8,908 housing units at an average density of 4/km˛ (10/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 98.92% White, 0.17% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.49% from two or more races. 0.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 8,228 households out of which 30.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.60% are married couples living together, 6.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.50% are non-families. 26.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.05.
