Tabu was born in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh as Tabassum Hashmi on November 4, 1972.
She has also won three statuettes in the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Performance category for Virasat (1997), Hu Tu Tu (1999), and Astitva (2000) respectively and in 1995 she was awarded with the Filmfare Best Debut Award
Despite a few exceptions, Tabu is known best for her willingness to play characters in artistic, low-budget films that go on to garner more critical appreciation than they do substantial box office figures (such as in Meenaxi: A Tale of Three Cities or Maqbool).
