Encyclopedia > Filter bank

A filter bank is an array of band-pass filters that separates the input signal into several components, each one carrying a single frequency subband of the original signal. It also is desirable to design the filter bank in such a way that subbands can be recombined to recover original signal. The first process is called analysis, while the second is called synthesis. The output of analysis is referred as subband signal with as many subbands as there are filters in filter bank. The frequency axis of this symbolic diagram would be logarithmically scaled. ... The filter bank serves to isolate different frequency components in a signal. This is useful because for most applications some frequencies are more important than others. For example these important frequencies can be coded with a fine resolution. Small differences at these frequencies are significant and a coding scheme that preserves these differences must be used. On the other hand, less important frequencies do not have to be exact. A coarser coding scheme can be used, even though some of the finer details will be lost in the coding. In telecommunication, signalling (or signaling) has the following meanings: The use of signals for controlling communications. ... The term coding has the following meanings: In communications systems, the altering of the characteristics of a signal to make the signal more suitable for an intended application, such as optimizing the signal for transmission, improving transmission quality and fidelity, modifying the signal spectrum, increasing the information content, providing error...

The vocoder uses a filter bank to determine the amplitude information of the subbands of a modulator signal (such as a voice) and uses them to control the amplitude of the subbands of a carrier signal (such as the output of a guitar or synthesizer), thus imposing the dynamic characteristics of the modulator on the carrier. A vocoder (name derived from voice encoder, formerly also called voder) is a speech analyzer and synthesizer. ...

Dyadic Analysis Filter Bank (DSP Blockset) (1055 words)
The Lowpass FIR filter coefficients and Highpass FIR filter coefficients parameters specify (respectively) the filter coefficients to be used for every lowpass and highpass direct-form II transpose filter in the filter bank.
At the transmitting end, the output of the dyadic analysis filter bank is fed to a lossy compression scheme, which typically assigns the number of bits for each filter bank output in proportion to the relative energy in that frequency band.
At the receiving end, the transmission is decoded and fed to a dyadic synthesis filter bank to reconstruct the original signal.
Filter Banks (548 words)
A filter bank is an array of band-pass filters that spans the entire audible frequency spectrum, see Figure 1.
The filter bank, then, allows different parts of the signal to be encoded with a different number of bits resulting in a compressed data stream representation of the signal.
Once the signal is passed through each filter in the analysis bank, it is then down-sampled by the number of filters in the bank.
