The 2002 Fine Gael leadership election began in May 2002, when Michael Noonan resigned as party leader due to the party's poor performance in the 2002 general election. Noonan had only been party leader for little over fifteen months. His successor was elected by the members of the Fine Gaelparliamentary party on June 5, 2002. FineGael, since the days of Cumann na nGheadheal, has been known as the party of law and order as a result of its tough stance on crime and the causes of crime and its origins in defending the Anglo-Irish Treaty.
That document was the brainchild of Declan Costello a FineGael TD and son of former Taoiseach John A Costello and reflected an emerging faction in the party that was being influenced by Social Democracy.
FineGael's revitalisation was of such a scale that by the November 1982 general election, FineGael was only five seats behind Fianna Fáil in Dáil Éireann and bigger than the party in the Oireachtas (both houses of parliament put together).
