a jewel in the bosom of a glen, (anon. referring to Fingask)

Perched above Rait, posed 200 feet up overlooking the Firth of Tay, in the Braes of the Carse of Gowrie, on the fringes of the Sidlaw Hills lies Fingask. Fingask was once an explicitly Holy place, a convenient and numinous stop off between the abbeys at Falkirk and Scone. In the eighteenth century it was a nest of Jacobites. When the King cam to Fingask
To see Sir David and his Lady,
A cod’s head weel made wi’ sauce
Took a hunder pund to mak’ it ready.

The above lines describe the Old Pretender’s stay with Sir David Threipland at Fingask on the night of January 7th 1716. These days the ‘King’ is represented by the hundreds who come along every May to mull not cod but the inspired whims and tunes of the likes of Sondheim, Mozart, Ovid, Auden, Larkin, Lehar, Lehrer, Porter, Gilbert and Sullivan, Pigalle, Bernstein, Novello, Wagner, Weill, Wortley, and Coward. The Follies was conceived over a decade ago during the bachelor days of Fingask’s resident maestro Andrew Threipland. Earlier Threiplands spent their winters revolting against London (and Edinburgh) or curling. The present incumbent, an economist and sometime Pembrokeshire dairy farmer and cheesemaker, finding neither the courage to revolt nor gaming skill set about rather to churn tunes and fill his house and topiary garden with laughter, neighbours and friends on at least a few of the long summer evenings. The show comprises two acts of 35 minutes with an hour break for supper. It is made up of a carefully spliced mish-mash of show tunes, a melange of bien pensés and a pic-nic of parody. Part tutorial, part vacation, it is a synthesis of theatrical rigour, a plethora of fecund and frivolous, of song, poetry, satire, action and prose. Threipland’s aim is for everyone to leave ‘humming an old tune, and thinking a new thought’. This May 2007 sees the twelveth Follies’ season in their twelveth year. Starting with Ossian in July 1996, they have progressed through: Moonstruck; Love all (Tennis, Eros & Agape); My Fair Lady?; The Framing of the Shrew; Spondulics Galore!; Brief’s Galore; The Fouler Sex; Genes Galore; Facts & Fallacies; Crumpet!; to this year's Having a Good Time. In ten years the Follies have grown beyond their original three-night run at their Tayside home at Fingask and have gradually spread their wings to reach this year’s total of 14 shows: eight nights at Fingask and a tour taking in venues in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Ayrshire, Rosshire, the Borders, Norfolk, and London. Free of state aid the Follies are registered as Scotch charity number 32229.
James Francis Edward Stuart, the Old Pretender Prince James Francis Edward Stuart or Stewart (June 10, 1688 – January 1, 1766) was a claimant of the thrones of Scotland and England (September 16, 1701 – January 1, 1766) and is commonly referred to as The Old Pretender. ...

Subscription Mural

Mural Key, 2007
Follies Mural, work in process, spring 2007

The castle is home to an accretive mural by Ivan Govorkov and Lena Gubanova of St. Petersburg. The five year old wall painting is added to each spring and now has already nearly 60 objects, including 35 portraits. The painting features portraits of Sir James Cayzer, Bt; Vicky Jardine Patterson; Claire Enders; Heloise Thomson; Chic Murray; and Lofty Buchanan. Inspired by R. H. van Rijn's great seventeenth subscription portraits (viz. the Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp and the The Militia Company of Captain Frans Banning Cocq) and then by the British eighteenth and nineteenth century continuation of the tradition, where good institutions would use such things as a means to raise money. This one is thought to be the only active subscription portrait in existence.
