McGrath supports Greenpeace, opposed the Nice Treaty, favours an "inevitable" 32-county republic achieved through peaceful means, and campaigned against the Dublin port tunnel and the proposed infill development of part of Dublin Bay.
McGrath says he was honoured when the few hundred pounds left over from McAliskey's campaign were given to him some years later.
