Fiorenza Cossotto is an Italian mezzo soprano. Born on April 22, 1935 in Crescentino di Vercelli, Italy, she attended Torino Academy of Music and graduated at the top of her class.


After her studies with Mercedes Llopart, she debuted in 1955 at the La Scala in Milan. She made her American debut in 1964. She was awarded the Gold record for her performance of Lady Macbeth.


She came to international fame as a portrayer of Verdi's art and is believed by many to be the greatest mezzo-soprano of the 20th century.


Selected roles she has played: Amneris in Aida, Ulrica in Un Ballo in Maschera, Eboli in Don Carlo, Santuzza in Cavalleria Rusticana, Azucena in Il Trovatore, Carmen in Carmen;


In 2005 she will be celebrating her 70th anniversary in Luttich / Belgium on stage.
