Tagline: Alien abduction. November 5, 1975. White Mountains, Northeastern Arizona. Based on the true story. Plot summary
Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. On November 5, 1975, near Snowflake, Arizona, logger Travis Walton disappears mysteriously during an encounter with a flying saucer. Authorities treat with skepticism the outrageous story related by the only witnesses to the event, Walton's co-workers, who include his best friend and future brother-in-law, Mike Rogers. They are suspected of foul play despite no apparent motive or clue as to Walton's previous whereabouts. A state lawman finds a tabloid newspaper in the crew's pickup truck and quickly ascertains that tensions had arisen between Walton and Allan Dallis, a surly fellow co-worker, leading him to conclude that a murder cover-up is underway. However, all the men pass lie detector tests and the case becomes stalled. Then, five days later, just as mysteriously, Walton reappears, claiming he was abducted by extraterrestrials and taken aboard a UFO. November 5 is the 309th day of the year (310th in leap years) in the Gregorian Calendar, with 56 days remaining. ...

Trivia - Walton's original book, The Walton Experience was later re-released as Fire in the Sky (ISBN 1-56924-710-2) to promote its connection to the film.
- A made-for-television film of almost identical title, A Fire in the Sky, made in 1978, concerns a comet on collision course with Earth that strikes just outside Phoenix, Arizona. The focus of the film deals with the reaction of denial, and then a desperate bid to get out of the city.
- The real Travis Walton makes a cameo appearance in this film.
- Robert Patrick played an extraterrestrial himself in the 1998 film The Faculty and in 2000 joined the cast of the TV series The X-Files as Special Agent Doggett.
- This film was shot on location in Oakland, Oregon.
- The film strongly hints that the entire incident was indeed a hoax, exacerbated by Skywatch inducing false memories.
