The communists originally disagreed on how to defend Jiangxi Soviet. In numerous debates, many believed in the decision made in early August, 1930 which suggested that the majority of the 40,000 strong Chinese Red Army should strike Nanchang and Jiujiang, forcing the nationalist on the defensive, thus abandoning the encirclement campaign.
