The First Mate (????) is known as Simone Katanga's closest companion in the Katanga Anthologies. His birthplace is unknown, but it is generally accepted that he was born somewhere in Africa. He became Katanga's First Mate of the Bantu Wind approximately around 1927, in the short story Katanga and the Lost Mask General folklore and tavern talk tells of The First Mate being found in Western Africa fighting against the British in the Zulu Wars, and wandering to Algiers where Katanga found him. The First Mate was present during the Atlantic Confrontion in Raiders of the Lost Ark, where Katanga verbally resisted Nazi boarders.
