Sadly losing league games that should have been won saw the club finish in 6th place, 23 points behind the promoted clubs. During the close season, Stevens left the club to concentrate on business affairs, and former Director of Football Bob Davies took over as Manager. He departed in October 2003 to be replaced by non-league scoring legend Gary Abbott. Regrettably Abbott's talent for scoring did not extend to management and he quickly departed.
