Fitchburg is a city located in Dane County, Wisconsin. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 20,501.


Fitchburg is a suburb of Madison.


Geography

Fitchburg is located at 43°0'23" North, 89°25'53" West (43.006347, -89.431502)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 90.3 km² (34.9 mi²). 90.2 km² (34.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.11% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 20,501 people, 8,262 households, and 4,825 families residing in the city. The population density is 227.3/km² (588.8/mi²). There are 8,604 housing units at an average density of 95.4/km² (247.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 82.19% White, 8.64% African American, 0.42% Native American, 3.19% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 3.05% from other races, and 2.47% from two or more races. 6.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 8,262 households out of which 31.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.2% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.6% are non-families. 28.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 3.00.


In the city the population is spread out with 23.9% under the age of 18, 12.5% from 18 to 24, 37.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 5.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 107.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 107.0 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $50,433, and the median income for a family is $64,106. Males have a median income of $37,440 versus $27,974 for females. The per capita income for the city is $27,317. 6.4% of the population and 5.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.2% of those under the age of 18 and 6.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
