The museum was founded in 1816 from a bequest of Richard, the 7th Viscount Fitzwilliam of Merrion to the University of Cambridge.
The FitzwilliamMuseum is funded partly by the University of Cambridge, and partly through endowments, trust funds and charitable donations.
Its purpose is to supplement the museum's very meagre purchase grant, and to run a lively programme of private viewings, tours, concerts and lectures for its members, who also volunteer their time for guiding and educational purposes.
