History

Five Guys was founded in 1986 in Arlington, Virginia, by Janie and Jerry Murrell and their five sons, the "Five Guys".[1] The first location, which no longer exists, was in the Westmont Shopping Center at the corner of South Glebe Rd and Columbia Pike. Buns were baked by Brenner's Bakery of Arlington Inc., owned and operated by Issi and Max Brenner, only a few doors down. In 2002, there were five locations in Northern Virginia run by the family. The restaurants had gained popularity among locals, and the Murrells decided to franchise the stores. As of June 2008, there are more than 300 locations along the East Coast from Florida to Connecticut. Additional locations are in Georgia, Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Minnesota, Kansas City, New Jersey, New York and South Carolina. On opening day of the Washington Nationals new Nationals Park a new restaurant behind the main scoreboard. Their first store in California opened on May 26, 2008 in Carson. In California, they will compete with In-N-Out Burger. On June 16, 2008 a Five Guys location opened in Salt Lake City, Utah.
