Other historical flags Note that Hong Kong and Macau were handed over to the People's Republic of China in 1997 and 1999 respectively. Before the handovers, the PRC recognised Hong Kong and Macau as its territory though they were not under its direct control. The Republic of China also recognised these regions as part of ROC territory, just as the ROC claims sovereignity over Mainland China.
