History

The flag of Christmas Island was unofficially adopted in 1986 after being chosen the winner in a competition for a flag for the territory. It was designed by Tony Couch of Sydney, Australia. The flag was made official on Australia Day, 2002 when the administrator of the territory, Bill Taylor, presented the flag to the Christmas Island Shire. Symbolism

The blue field represents the sea that surrounds the island while the green field represents the lush vegetation of the island itself. The southern cross appears in the blue field, representing Christmas Island's connection with Australia as well as its location in the southern hemiphere. The bird is a Golden Bosun, native to the island. The yellow disc represents the island's history in phosphate mining. Finally, there is a map of the island in the centre of the disc. The Territory of Christmas Island is a small, non self-governing Territory of Australia located in the Indian Ocean, 2360 km northwest of Perth in Western Australia and 500 km south of Jakarta, Indonesia.
Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands together are called Australia's Indian Ocean Territories (IOTs) and since 1997 share a single Administrator resident on Christmas Island.
Christmas Island is of immense scientific value as it was uninhabited until the late 19th century, so many unique species of fauna and flora exist which have evolved independently of human interference.
