Standard of the Government of Liechtenstein. Proportions: 3:5
The flag of Liechtenstein consists of two equal horizontal bands of blue (top) and red with a gold Duke crown on the hoist side of the blue band. The colors likely derive from the livery colors of the Principality's royal household in the 18th century. The crown was added in 1937, after it was discovered by Liechtenstein's team at the 1936 Summer Olympics that the flag was otherwise identical to the flag of Haiti. The Principality of Liechtenstein (German: Fürstentum Liechtenstein) is a small, doubly landlocked country in Western Europe, bordered by Switzerland to its west and by Austria to its east.
The Liechtenstein dynasty, from which the Principality takes its name (rather than vice-versa), comes from Castle Liechtenstein in faraway Lower Austria, which the family possessed from at least 1140 to the 13th century, and from 1807 onwards.
Liechtenstein is situated in the Upper Rhine valley of the European Alps.
