The national flag of Nepal is the only non-quadrangular national flag, and one of only two non-rectangular official jurisdictional flags in the world (the other is the flag of Ohio). It is also one of only three national flags whose shape is not of a rectangle with unequal sides (the other two being Switzerland and Vatican City, which are square). Interpretation

The blue border denotes peace and harmony that has been prevalent in the country since the age of Gautam Buddha, who was born in Nepal. The crimson color is Nepal's national color, and it indicates the brave spirit of the Nepalese people. The triangular shape of the flag denotes that Nepal is a Hindu Country. The Hindus use the red triangular flag since the time of Ramayana and Mahabharata. It is a symbol of victory. The triangles do not represent mountains, because if it does so, then it is a great injustice to the people who live in Terai (plain land). It would indicate that Nepal constitutes only of Mountains and Hills, which is not the case. The two symbols of the sun and the moon represents the hope that Nepal will last as long as the sun and the moon. National flags of countries outside Europe only developed after European national flags had standardized their shape, so they were imitating the rectangular shape as well as some of the symbolic elements (vertical/horizontal stripes, for instance).
