This flag was originally that of the United Provinces of Central America (independent 1821) from which Nicaragua succeeded in 1838.
The present form of the flag was established by a Decree of 4 September 1908, and this stipulates that the national emblem shall appear in the centre of the flag but makes no mention of a civil or merchant flag without arms.
