The modern UnitedStatesArmy has its roots in the Continental Army which was formed on June 14, 1775, before the establishment of the UnitedStates, to meet the demands of the American Revolutionary War.
The army is led by a civilian Secretary of the Army, who reports to the Secretary of Defense, as well as the US Army Chief of Staff, who is a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the top ranking military commanders from each service who advise the President on military matters.
Operationally, though, control of the Army in wartime is goes from the President of the UnitedStates to the Unified Combatant Commanders, who have control of all armed forces units in their geographic area of responsibility.
