History The Flakpanzer (shortened from Flugabwehrkanonenpanzer) 38(t) was designed around the chassis of the Czech-built LT-38 tracked vehicle and was first built in 1943, entering limited service in 1944. The Flakpanzer 38(t) was basically never good enough to fulfill it's intended role being very limited in firepower and in the ability to move it's firepower around, it became favorite prey for Allied fighter-bombers late in the war as it had very little armour. The engine was located towards the front of the vehicle and the armament was placed at the rear in an armoured section. During World War II, 160 Flakpanzer 38(t)'s were built, most serving on the Russian Front and almost all of these serving as Infantry support units rather than Anti-Aircraft units as they were originally intended. Armament The single Flak 38 gun, of 20 mm or .79 calibre, was not well-suited to the chassis of the somewhat cumbersome LT-38 which could not provide the mobilty required to operate successfully as an anti-aircraft artillery unit. However, as the Germans discovered on the Russian front, the 20 mm cannon was an awesome weapon against infantry and soft-skinned vehicles and was widely used in that role. American troops man an anti-aircraft gun near the Algerian coastline in 1943 Anti-aircraft, or air defense, is any method of combating military aircraft from the ground. ...
Powerplant Based on the Czech built chassis of the LT-38 and using the Czech engine that went with it, left the Flakpanzer 38(t) underpowered and lacking mobility, the Praga AC engine was only capable of producing around 147 hp and the vehicle itself weighed 9,800 kg, meaning the unit was never going to be a war-winner in any stretch of the imagination. |
