One of the first big Casinos in Las Vegas, The Flamingo had lavish shows and glorious accomodations for it's day. The casino became well known for it's comfortable, air conditioned accomodations, beautiful gardens and fabulous swimming pools. The Flamingo helped popularize the concept of offering a "complete experience" as opposed to simple gambling.
Funding for the Casino came from Mob Money and it was conceptualized and it's construction supervised by the infamous Mob Figure, Benmamin Seigel. (Commonly known as Bugsy Seigel). When it had been discovered that Ben Seigel was Skimming money from the building funds, his death was ordered and management for the casino changed hands.
The Flamingo still operates to this day, although it has since been completely torn down and rebuilt to accomodate more guests and cater to families vacationing in Las Vegas.
Flamingo Bay Hotel adorned by the beautiful emerald green Bell Channel Waterway is part of three Taino Beach resort and clubs properties on Grand Bahama Island.
Flamingo Bay Hotel is comprised of sixty-eight individual lodging quarters each equipped with the basic conveniences of home.
Flamingo Bay is also located minutes from Downtown Freeport and major ports of entry: just 8 miles from Freeport International Airport, 10 miles from Freeport Harbour, and 7 miles from Downtown Freeport.
The hotel was acquired by the Hilton Corporation in 1972 and became the Flamingo Hilton in 1974.
The last of the original FlamingoHotel structure was torn down on December 14, 1993 and the hotel's garden was built on the site, complete with a plaque to Bugsy Siegel.
In the novel, the famed myth of Siegel's creation of the Flamingo was utilized as a basis for the overall supernatural plot of the novel (rather than the true historic account of his acquiring it from the original founder).
