Some medical students take turns temporarily killing each other, then bringing each other back to life, with the intent of simply "visiting" the Afterlife. • The title refers to the flatline state of an EKG or EEG at death.
• This was Julia Robert's first role after Pretty Woman. She's stated that of all the movies she's made, her time on this one was the most fun. It was on the set of this film that she met Sutherland, whom she almost married.
• The films depiction of cardiopulmonary resuscitation is, in fact, highly inaccurate. The characters are repeatedly depicted using defibrillation to restart a heart that is in an asystolic (flatline) rhythm. When the heart is in this rhythm, it is already completely depolarised and so defibrillation would have no effect. Instead appropriate drugs would be utilised to try to restart the heart. Even with hospital care and experienced clinicians an asystolic rhythm is incompatible with life and very few people are ever sucessfully resuscitated from this rhythm.
