Encyclopedia > Flatus

Flatus is a semi-retired webcomic featured on The Double "S" webpage (www.thedoubles.com). The comic features six vaguely anthropomorphic creatures: Peanut, Zygote, Mr. Soup, Absinthe, Tibia and Fibula (twin sisters). Stylistically, Flatus differs from more established webcomics in that it does not appear hand-drawn, but rather takes on a more simplistic, computer-aided drawing style. Webcomics, also known as online comics and web comics, are comics that are available on the Internet. ...

Characters

The main players in Flatus, and the only characters actually depicted in-panel, are Peanut, Zygote, Mr. Soup, Absinthe, Tibia, and Fibula. Peanut exhibits a gleeful naivete, extending a child-like trust to the other characters. Zygote, a "half-plant, half-machine," carries a more sarcastic tone, and has been romantically associated with both Tibia and Fibula. Mr. Soup often functions as the moral center of the group, providing a voice of reason (and often outrage) when other characters concoct their plans. Absinthe, a masked, tunnel-dwelling creature, projects a misanthropic, bitter attitude, with a self-aggrandizing, megalomaniacal streak. Tibia brings a bit of estrogen to the group, acting as a sort of mother figure to Peanut, and an object of lust to the other males. Fibula is more kinetic than Tibia, and proves a foil to her sister as well in their pursuit of Zygote's empty affections.

Flatulence consists of gases that are produced by symbiotic bacteria and yeasts living in the gastrointestinal tract of mammals and are released through the anus.
The primary constituents of flatulence (collectively known as flatus) are the non-odorous gases nitrogen (ingested), oxygen (ingested), methane (produced by anaerobic microbes), carbon dioxide (produced by aerobic microbes or ingested), and hydrogen (produced by some microbes and consumed by others).
Interest in the causes of flatulence was spurred by high-altitude flight and the space program; the low atmospheric pressure, confined conditions, and stresses peculiar to those endeavours were cause for concern.
