Show format

The show was part of VH1's Celebreality lineup and its format is similar to that of The Bachelor.[1] Twenty different ladies compete for Flavor Flav's heart as they live together in a mansion in Encino, California.[1] He is helped in his quest by his bodyguard and chauffeur named "Big Rick".[3] He was also assisted by his mother, as well as his former romantic partner Brigitte Nielsen in the first season,[3] and Tiffany Pollard in the second. The show also helped spin off two new shows: I Love New York[4] and Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School.[5] VH1 (VH-1: Video Hits One until 1994 and VH1: Music First until 2003) is an American digital television channel that was created in January 1985 by Warner-Amex Satellite Entertainment, at the time a division of Warner Communications and owners of MTV. In the show, each contestant is given a nickname by Flav[2] and is referred to by that nickname for as long as she remains in the competition. Flavor of Love features a clock ceremony[3] where contestants who are not eliminated receive gold clocks to wear around their necks with their picture behind the hands of the clock. When a contestant is eliminated, her real name is then revealed,[6] followed by a champagne toast.[7]

There are a few basic elements of the show's format that have been consistent through each season of production. Throughout the season the contestants compete for intimate dates with Flav by competing in various challenges. Another typical component of the show is the involvement of the women's ex-boyfriends. This usually occurs when there are 6 or less contestants left. Also, Flav brings the few remaining women's parents on in the third or second to last episode. Finally, the season finale takes place in a tropical destination. The two finalists and Flav spend the last two days at a luxurious resort proceeding his final decision.

The week following the finale an all-cast reunion is typically aired. A host spends this time reviewing the most memorable moments and interviewing the contestants after they have seen the season. This is also when you find out if Flav is still with the woman he chose and what they have been up to since the season wrapped.

VH1 has also introduced an internet component into the show. Viewers can create profiles, interact with contestants and other fans, and stay current with news at flavorofloveworld.com. In season 3, fans even got to vote online to elect 4 of the contestants. Ironically, Flav sent 4/5 of them home in the premiere episode.

Defining Moments

• In season one at the second to last elimination ceremony, contestant “Pumpkin” was eliminated leaving “Hoopz” and “New York” as the final two. As she was exiting, “Pumpkin” began to respond to “New York’s” antagonizing, which eventually led to the act of “Pumpkin” spitting in “New York’s” face. New York then shoved her into the cameras and took off her heel to intentionally attack her. After being stopped by the camera crew several times, New York decided to get ready to go to Mexico, which is where the finale took place.

• In season two, at an elimination ceremony, Flavor Flav as well as the contestants began to smell a foul odor. To their surprise contestant “Sumthin” was found to have lost control of her bowels. “Sumthin” defecated on the floor as well as the stairs before she quietly left the traditional champagne toast.

• In the season two opening, contestants H-town and Saaphyri fought violently over a bed. They fought verbally and after H-Town had thrown flowers in Saaphyri's face, Saaphryri violently responded by throwing her into the wall, pulling her hair, and punching her repeatedly in the head. Due to her violent actions, Saaphyri was ultimately eliminated immediately, even before nicknames were given out

• In season two, the contestant “Toastee” was found to have nude and sexual pictures of her on a porn website. By her lying to Flav about, he eliminated her.

• At about halfway through the second season, former contestant New York entered the house as a guest. As she was there, she had insulted every single girl by saying Krazy was fake and by tapping her on the head, by saying Deelishis looks like man, Beautiful has "no voice", Buckwild is "straight from the fucking trailer park, Nibblz is a dirty slut, Bootz is disrespectful, and Buckeey looked horrible in her dress. As New York and Flav connected throughout the day, he decided to let her compete in letting her win his heart again. This led to Buckwild voluntarily leaving because she didn't want to assault New York and didn't want to "go back to jail for that bitch"

• In season two, as Deelishis and Flav were on date, Buckeey and Krazy got into a dangerous fight on one of the balconeys. Buckeey heard Krazy say her name and wanted to know what she was saying. Krazy had then gotten up to imitate Buckeey and Deelishis. As Buckeey had gotten in Krazys face, Krazy "gave her a small little punk-ass push" which led to Buckeey nearly pushing her off the second floor balconey twice, and pushing her to the side until the camera crew separated them. Buckeeys violent actions led to her elimination.

• In season three, a major turning point on the show came when four new contestants were brought in when half of the contestants were already eliminated. “Black,” “Tree,” “Prototype,” and “Luscious D” brought new threats to the existing contestants.

• In season three, another shocking moment occurred while in France when Flav eliminated Seezinz and brought back Thing 2, much to Sinceer's dismay.

Social Implications

As part of VH1’s Celebreality, the Flavor of Love represents what sociologist John Storey calls “popular culture as mass culture.” With defining features of a “hopelessly commercial”(Storey 11) commodity, a form of entertainment that appeals to the masses, the show attracts a wide variety of viewers. Due to its content and target audience, young adults interested in un-intellectual lowbrow comedy, the Flavor of Love gives its viewers brainless entertainment. Flavor of Love also embodies the fundamental archetypal characters and narratives found in the majority of reality TV shows i.e. “the bitch,” “the girl with loose morals,” and “the emotionally unavailable drama queen.” The basic formula that Flavor of Love uses in its narratives, combined with the celebrity of Flavor Flav, has no doubt contributed to its popularity and success as a reality television show.[14]

Spin-offs

I Love New York

The twice rejected Flavorette Tiffany "New York" Pollard has her own quest to find her true love in a pool of 20 men.[15] Season one featured Mauricio Sanchez as "Chamo" (New York's assistant) along with Pollard's mother, Sister Patterson. Season two also featured Sister Patterson, but "Chamo" was replaced by "Big Ant," New York's bodyguard.
New York said that she did not care that season one winner, Tango, broke off the engagement, nor would it not cause her any bother. The series first aired Monday, January 8, 2007, the season one finale aired April 2, 2007 and the reunion special aired April 15, 2007. New York announced during a commercial break on the April 29, 2007 episode of Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School that there will be a second season of the show.
The second season aired on VH1 on October 8, 2007, and the season two finale aired on December 17, 2007. Tailor Made was named the winner of season two over Buddha.[16] The second season Reunion Show aired on January 6, 2008 on VH1.

Charm School

Thirteen Flavorettes from the first two seasons of Flavor of Love are assigned the challenge of developing proper etiquette in a competition for $50,000[5] and the title of "Charm School Queen." The hostess of Charm School is actress and comedienne Mo'Nique.[5] The two other "deans", Essence editor Mikki Taylor and talent agent Keith Lewis help Mo'Nique decide who to eliminate.[17] The winner of Charm School was Flavor of Love (Season 2) disqualified contestant Saaphyri Windsor.[17] She was chosen to be on the Charm School cast because of her altercation with H-Town. The show was filmed in January 2007. This show premiered Sunday, April 15, 2007 with a ten episode run.[5] The season finale aired on July 1, 2007[5] and the reunion show aired on July 8, 2007.
