Flight is a comics anthology series edited by Kazu Kibuishi, showcasing young and innovative arists and writers. According to Volume One's Afterword by "Scott McCloud's Brain", the average age of its contributors was 24 years, although Volume Two features one or two older contributors. The first two volumes were published by Image Comics. In June 2005 Kibuishi announced that the series would move from Image to Ballantine Books from Volume Three on in an attempt to increase sales through mainstream bookstores. Kibuishi also stated that subsequent volumes would be released twice-yearly. Comics (or, less commonly, sequential art) is a form of visual art consisting of images which are commonly combined with text, often in the form of speech balloons or image captions. ... Comics anthologies collect works in the medium of comics that are too short for stand-alone publication. ... Kazu Kibuishi is a graphic novel author. ... Volume One was published in July 2004 and contains 23 stories, totalling approximately 160 (unnumbered) pages. Volume Two, published in March 2005, is over 400 pages long and contains 33 stories with a greater average length. The increase in size is almost certainly due to the interest generated in prospective contributors by the first volume. Kibuishi has denied that Flight is a theme anthology, or that the title has any significance besides being short and memorable. Nevertheless, many of the strips do feature flight in one or more sense of the word. Other than that there is no unifying style or theme; the strips exhibit a wide variety of art techniques from the conventional to the experimental, and storylines include comedy, tragedy, macabre, adventure and romance. Unfortunately, Alpha Flight recently met its end in the pages of Marvel Comics' "New Avengers," seemingly leaving only the Mounties and that guy from "Due South" to protect the country.
Thought Alpha Flight has always been a well-known team since their debut in "Uncanny X-Men," and their self-titled series by John Byrne drew quite a bit of acclaim, it's always seemed as though 'Flight never quite made the top tier of Marvel's superhero team hierarchy.
Some old school "Alpha Flight" fans have been worried about the sweeping changes to the team, namely the death of much of the old cast and a very unusual new cast in "Omega Flight," concerns that Kolins understands.
