Florian Leopold Gassmann (3 May 172920 January 1774) was an Bohemian opera composer. He was one of the principal composers of opera buffa immediately before Mozart. Many of the librettos he set were by the great Venetian playwright Carlo Goldoni. His daughters Anna Fux and Therese Rosenbaum were both famous singers. Gassmann’s father, a goldsmith, was opposed to his son pursuing a musical career and had him apprenticed to a local merchant at the age of twelve.
Gassmann’s setting of Metastasio’s Cantone in Utica was staged at the Burgtheater in the 1761- 62 season and the following year he was invited to Vienna as ballet composer and successor to Gluck.
Gassmann’s tenure of the position was brief: he died in 1774 as a result of a fall from a carriage.

Florian Leopold Gassmann (born in Most, 3 May 1729 – died in Vienna, 21 January 1774) was a German-speaking Bohemian opera composer of the transitional period between the baroque and classical eras.
In 1764, Gassmann became chamber composer to the Emperor, and in 1772 court conductor.
Gassmann's two daughters, Anna Fux and Therese Rosenbaum, were both famous singers trained by Salieri; the younger, Therese, made a particular name for herself as a Mozart interpreter.
