Florian Leopold Gassmann (3 May1729 – 20 January1774) was an Bohemianoperacomposer. He was one of the principal composers of opera buffa immediately before Mozart. Gassmanns father, a goldsmith, was opposed to his son pursuing a musical career and had him apprenticed to a local merchant at the age of twelve.
Gassmanns setting of Metastasios Cantone in Utica was staged at the Burgtheater in the 1761- 62 season and the following year he was invited to Vienna as ballet composer and successor to Gluck.
Gassmanns tenure of the position was brief: he died in 1774 as a result of a fall from a carriage.
