Floyd County is a county located in the state of Iowa. As of 2000, the population is 16,900. Its county seat is Charles City, Iowa6.


Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,298 km˛ (501 mi˛). 1,296 km˛ (501 mi˛) of it is land and 2 km˛ (1 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 0.15% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 16,900 people, 6,828 households, and 4,711 families residing in the county. The population density is 13/km˛ (34/mi˛). There are 7,317 housing units at an average density of 6/km˛ (15/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 98.11% White, 0.23% Black or African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.44% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 1.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 6,828 households out of which 30.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.70% are married couples living together, 7.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.00% are non-families. 28.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.92.


In the county the population is spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 7.00% from 18 to 24, 24.40% from 25 to 44, 24.20% from 45 to 64, and 19.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 93.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.40 males.


The median income for a household in the county is $35,237, and the median income for a family is $41,133. Males have a median income of $30,285 versus $20,867 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,091. 9.30% of the population and 6.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.00% of those under the age of 18 and 5.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
