Founded in 1968 by O. Jay Call and headquartered in Ogden, Utah, Flying J is now the largest retailer of diesel fuel in North America with approximately 220 locations in the United States and Canada and 15,000 employees. The company produces and refines petroleum products for its truck stops and offers a number of pricing plans for owner/operators and trucking companies. The company also offers vehicle maintenance, banking, insurance and telecommunications services for the trucking industry, and a number of restaurants at its locations. Flying J buys Bakersfield refinery / Shell sought to close plant (526 words)
Flying J Inc. of Ogden, Utah, has signed an agreement with Shell to buy the 73-year-old refinery in the next three months pending the approval of federal regulators, the two companies said Monday.
Flying J Senior Vice President Jeff Utley said his company hasn't decided whether to keep that same proportion of fuels but wants to increase the refinery's overall output.
Flying J has not decided how many of the refinery's current 200 employees and 150 part-time contractors to keep, although it reported yesterday that it will abide by the employees' collective bargaining agreement.
