It is a very thin sword with a blunted (or foiled) tip. Foils are designed only for thrusting so as not to cause injury, and they are flexible enough to bend upon striking an opponent. There are three main types of foil, including the French style, with a grip (handle or hilt) designed to facilitate greater finesse. Other types include the Italian style, whose grip is designed more for control and power, and the orthopedic, or pistol grip, which takes the need for a firm hold on the weapon even further. The French style is commonly found among classical fencing masters, while sport fencers often prefer the pistol grip. Critics of the pistol grip, however, claim that it leads to a "deathgrip" on the foil and inhibits true mastery. History
The modern foil is descended from the training weapon for the small-sword, a lighter version of the rapier that was the common sidearm of the 18th century gentleman. (Rapier and even longsword foils are also known to have been used, but they were very different in terms of weight and use.) The Smallsword is a sword intermediate in historical period between the rapier and the classical épée, ancestor to the modern sporting épée. ...

Foil Today
A foil fencer. Valid target (the torso) is in black. In modern sport fencing, the foil is used as a thrusting weapon only; to score a point, one must touch an opponent with the tip of the foil with a force of at least 500 grams-force (4.90 newtons). The valid target area in foil is limited, due to the sport's conception at a time when fencing was practiced with limited safety equipment. Hits to the face were dangerous, so the head was removed as a valid target. The target was then further reduced to only the trunk of the body, where the vitals are located. A touch that lands on nonvalid target (i.e. anything but the trunk) stops the action, but no point is scored. Image File history File links Foilfen. ...

As with any fencing weapon, a heavy fencing jacket and a mask are worn when practicing with foils. A leather glove is commonly worn to prevent the grip from becoming slippery, as also with protection. In electric fencing, the foil is equipped with a pressure-sensitive button and must contact a metallic surface in order to register a touch. Electric fencers wear wire-mesh jackets called lamés, which cover valid target area (i.e. the torso and back, but not the arms, legs, or head). Lamé is a type of brocaded clothing fabric with inwoven metal threads, typically of gold or silver, giving it a metallic sheen. ...
