History

The band's status was relatively obscure prior to the Larry Clark film Kids, and its soundtrack, nearly half of which included original compositions by Barlow and Davis. The song 'Natural One' from the film's well-selling soundtrack (though not included in the film) was a hit single and reached # on the the charts. Though the band attempted to duplicate the success of that song, their subsequent albums and singles were nowhere near as successful as the Natural One single. After Davis left the band in 2000, Barlow recruited Russ Pollard and Imaad Wasif from the band Alaska! to record The New Folk Implosion. CMT.com : Folk Implosion : Biography (865 words)
The Folk Implosion subsequently signed with the Communion label and recorded a relatively long EP titled Take a Look Inside the Folk Implosion, also in 1994; they followed it with the more experimental, import-only Electric Idiot EP in 1995.
Somewhat taken aback by the song's success, London Records (who'd released the soundtrack) attempted to sign the Folk Implosion permanently, but they were reluctant to leave the certainty of Communion for uncharted larger-label waters, and hoped to see whether they could continue their success by doing things on a smaller scale.
Barlow had always insisted that the Folk Implosion was an equal partnership with Davis, despite his own well-established reputation in the underground.
The Folk Implosion - PopMatters Concert Review (736 words)
Folk Implosion hit their commercial and artistic peak providing the soundtrack to the movie Kids, scoring an unlikely hit with the jumpy, poppy and lopsided "Natural One" and all the fanfare associated with such matters.
Folk Implosion releases with Davis were awesome -- a tightly wound elastic, bouncing and lurching this way and that while remaining tethered to a simple pop structure.
Paint by numbers, the New Folk Implosion is second-rate and that is a damn shame for a musician, performer and songwriter of Barlow's caliber.
