Fond du Lac County is a county located in the state of Wisconsin. As of 2000, the population is 97,296. Its county seat is Fond du Lac6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,983 km˛ (766 mi˛). 1,872 km˛ (723 mi˛) of it is land and 111 km˛ (43 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 5.60% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 97,296 people, 36,931 households, and 25,482 families residing in the county. The population density is 52/km˛ (135/mi˛). There are 39,271 housing units at an average density of 21/km˛ (54/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 96.16% White, 0.90% Black or African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.87% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.84% from other races, and 0.82% from two or more races. 2.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 36,931 households out of which 32.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.70% are married couples living together, 7.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.00% are non-families. 25.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.04.


In the county, the population is spread out with 25.20% under the age of 18, 9.40% from 18 to 24, 28.70% from 25 to 44, 22.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 95.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.20 males.

The county itself was created in 1836, the year that the first permanent settlers, Colwert and Edward Pier, arrived.
The eventual city of Fond du Lac, which historian Joseph Schafer refers to as "the first location to be exploited entirely for speculative purposes," was effectively created by James Duane Doty, the Wisconsin territory's premier speculator.
In far western Fond du Lac County, the population of Metomen, first settled in 1844, grew from 460 in 1847 to 720 by 1850 and 1617 by 1860.
